The Burgos start of this Vuelta 2021 reaches its peak today. The peloton faces the first great ascent of the race, Picón Blanco. An ascent that starts in Espinosa de los Monteros with 7.6 kilometers at 9.3%. A port of the entity enough to mean the first great exam of the Spanish round. It will be the end of a day that begins in Santo Domingo de Silos and has two third-rate ports before reaching the final ascent: the Manquillo port in the initial section with 7.2 km at 4.3% and the port de Bocos, which will have an extra bonus, with 2.8 km at 6.3%. These two levels, together with the nervousness due to the wind, makes it impossible to speak of a one-port stage.

The favorites don't take the day as a joke, far from it. Primoz Roglic assures that from what he knows about Picón Blanco and the entire previous route, “the stage is expected to be extremely tough”: “The first thing will be to arrive on foot from the port with the options intact, because there may be nervousness. Once there, I think the first differences will be seen. It is an important day for the general classification ”. The Slovenian, who is not obsessed with retaining the red jersey because "the important thing is to wear it in Santiago" does not want to point out who his great rival could be. Who do I have to worry about? Well, of those who are better and go up faster. It is a day to be at the top ”, says the Slovenian.

Astana, who already tried to snatch the lead with Aranburu yesterday (second to four seconds), has in the Russian Vlasov a candidate to assault the privileged position of Roglic, just 14 seconds away. Movistar, with Enric Mas (at 18 ”) and Superman López (at 21”) are also in a position to disturb the leader's team. It remains to be seen what attitude Ineos takes, which counts with Carapaz at 25 "and Bernal, at 27", although yesterday he saw Adam Yates, his third trick, move away in the general classification after being cut off by the fall of the last kilometers. The Briton, who came to the round with great illusions, is 51 ”behind Roglic.
