The Euskaltel-Euskadi leaves the Volta to Portugal due to two cases of COVID-19

The Basque team announced on Tuesday that it will not start in the fifth stage of the Portuguese round after finding two cases. The Caja Rural has already left for this reason.

Coronavirus infections have caused the abandonment of a new team during the Volta a Portugal dispute, which resumed its activity today after the rest day this Monday. This is the Euskaltel-Euskadi, which before the start of the day on Tuesday announced its departure from the race.

The team itself announced through a statement that the abandonment was due to the appearance of two positives after performing antigen tests among the team members. "The Euskaltel-Euskadi team will not start on Tuesday in the fifth stage of the Tour of Portugal due to two positive cases of COVID-19, as a result of the team's internal antigen controls. For responsibility and to preserve the health of all members and the peloton in general and in consensus with the organization of the Volta a Portugal, the orange formation has decided to abandon the race. On their return home, all members will take the corresponding tests indicated by the health authorities ".

The Euskaltel-Euskadi is not the only team that has abandoned Portugal in the Volta due to cases of coronavirus within the team, since last Saturday the Caja Rural also announced its resignation to continue in the race before the third stage after detecting two cases of coronavirus. It is expected that these do not affect these teams when making their teams for the start of La Vuelta this Saturday at the Cathedral of Burgos.
