"Márquez or Dovizioso would not beat me with the Aprilia"

Aleix Espargaró is happy with the brand's improvements, but wants more: "I have the feeling that the results are not as good as they could be."

Aleix Espargaró is, without a doubt, the name and surname of the greatest evolution of Aprilia since its entry into MotoGP. At 32 years old, the Spanish pilot continues to live the best stage of his sports career. Not only because of his great form (or his idyllic family life), but that of Granollers has managed to put the Italian brand's MotoGP as one of the fastest on the championship starting grid. He feels “happy with this progress”, “satisfied” with the work done in recent years and, above all, happy to be able to be competitive, even at the level of the great brands in this competition.

“We have taken the biggest step in the history of Aprilia in MotoGP, especially since I've been here,” says the eldest of the Espargaró brothers, who also indicates that the World Championship is already living “by far, the highest level in terms of to riders and motorcycles ”in recent years. However, although “the bike has changed a lot compared to last season”, perhaps the improvement will come a bit late and, therefore, they have not been able to take advantage of its great potential. “Last year the KTM riders got more out of the progress of the bike, and I don't think they were much more competitive than I am now. I may be wrong, but that's my feeling. They benefited by winning races and making podiums, which I don't do ”, adds # 41.

The podium, his great obsession

For this reason, Aleix Espargaró continues to have a great frustration: the podium. It is one of his goals for the season and, despite having touched it on several occasions during the nine races that opened the season, it remains a pending issue for this year. In fact, in an interview with the French magazine Moto Revue, Aleix already describes it as “almost an obsession” because, he says, “it is something that I deserve”. "I have the feeling that the results are not as good as they could be," adds the Catalan before resuming the races in Austria.

But the Aprilia is not going to throw in the towel so easily. Not after so many years of work and not after remembering how Noale's brand, at its start in the world championship, could only complete three laps in two days of testing in Qatar. “At that time it was just a road bike. Now I am fighting with the best motorcycles in the world and I am in the top 10 of the MotoGP championship ”, adds the Spaniard with confidence who, in addition, dares to predict even in front of the top riders in the world, he would be the fastest with the Aprilia: “I think that if Marc Márquez or Andrea Dovizioso raced on my bike, they wouldn't beat me, I'm 100% sure. With the time that I have devoted to it, I don't think there is much more to do with the Aprilia. ”

Aprilia, in search of a second rider

If there is a major headache for the Italian brand this season it is (apart from the podium) the search for a second rider to accompany Aleix Espargaró from 2022. Massimo Rivola, head of Aprilia , has already shown the manufacturer's interest in Maverick Viñales by confirming his departure from Yamaha or, even, his desire to have a runner-up like Andrea Dovizioso, who has been testing MotoGP in various tests in recent months. However, there is no response from the Italian.

Contrary to what the brand seems to be looking for, Aleix Espargaró has asked Aprilia to follow the path that other manufacturers have chosen and to bet, with a view to the future, on a young rider. For this reason, the one from Granollers looks at Moto2 where, he says, “there are quite a few fast riders” such as Fabio Di Giannantonio (who already rejected an offer for the Noale brand to bet on the Gresini team and the Ducati), Joe Roberts or Marco Bezzecchi, who also seems to be far from signing for the team. “When I say that I would like to have a young rider with me, it is because I think that Aprilia already has an experienced rider with me. A young rider, especially if he does not have a reference from another MotoGP motorcycle, could fit very well in our project ”, explains Aleix.
