Montonera in Albacete with Taaramäe, Bardet, Snow ...

A massive crash in the last kilometers of the stage ended with the leader, one of the favorites and several Spanish riders on the ground or cut off.

A tremendous pileup marked the end of the fifth stage of the Vuelta a España. It occurred 12 kilometers from the Albacete goal and left several victims. Among the many who went to the ground, leaving a chilling image, was the leader of the race, Rein Taaramäe, who ended up giving up the red jersey, as well as one of the favorites for the general, Romain Bardet.

A good number of Spanish runners were also involved, either by falls or by the cut that occurred between those who managed to avoid the accident and those who were blocked. One of the most injured was Mikel Nieve, who sustained injuries to his face and had to be treated on the asphalt. The Izagirre brothers and Omar Fraile, among others, lagged behind the leading group that played the sprint.
