Tour de France 2021 today, stage 17: profile and route

The Pyrenees offer a suitable terrain for the brave. Pogacar dominates with more than five minutes of difference to the rest. More must attack.

After the favorites smoked the stage between Pas de la Casa and Saint Gaudens, there are no excuses before the final fireworks of the Pyrenees. Today, Peyresourde (13.2 km at 7%), Val Louron-Azet (7.4 km at 8.3%) and finish in the Portet (16 km at 8.7%, at 2,215 meters of altitude). And tomorrow, the Tourmalet (17.1 km at 7.13) and arrival at Luz Ardiden (13.3 km at 7.4%). Although they consider Tadej Pogacar untouchable, the candidates for the Paris box should no longer miss any opportunity to open differences. On Saturday there is a 30.8 km time trial and the room for maneuver disappears.

The yellow jersey continues to spin with doubts about its superiority: "Maybe in the future I will publish my data, but I do not consider it necessary. I undergo anti-doping tests and do nothing wrong." Pogacar believes that he will not need great bragging to defend his position: "I will remain attentive to the movements of the closest opponents in the general classification. If the opportunity arises to get more income or to win a Pyrenean stage, go ahead." With Rigoberto Urán at 5:18, second, he has plenty of mattress. In the UAE they point out that without Primoz Roglic or a more demanding Ineos to tighten his ward, the sense of authority multiplies.

However, the candidates for the title refute that theory: "Play with us and we only have to fight for the rest of the places of honor. If he handles the watts of 2020, the rest of us are in those numbers or higher." Urán admits that he only intends to resist: "If nothing is achieved against the leader, the best thing is to endure in the mountains. The time trial is not bad for me." Jonas Vingegaard (at 5:32) wants to hold on to the podium: "I'd rather distinguish myself on the Champs-Élysées than look for a partial victory or start like crazy. I like the time trial" .

So the attacks, if in the end they occur, will be carried out by Richard Carapaz (at 5:33), Ben O'Connor (at 5:58) or Enric Mas (at 7:11), more climbers than Wilco Kelderman ( at 6:16) and Alexey Lutsenko (at 7:01). Because to date everything has been more intentions than facts. For Mas, fifth in 2020, there should be no tomorrow in the Pyrenees. Although he started with the idea of the box and to improve his results, at the moment that leap does not come: "We will face two brutal days, with tremendous chains to advance in the classification." We'll see.
