RAC1: basketball Madrid could play at the Bernabéu

The news is from RAC1. The station assures, in the program Tu diràs, that this revolutionary change is being considered in the club: "A great probability".

It would be, if confirmed, revolutionary news in the world of basketball: according to RAC1, Real Madrid basketball could play at the Santiago Bernabéu, where the works for the total renovation of the stadium and the creation of a new house, modern and embedded fully in the future, for the team led by Florentino Pérez. In theory only for football ... but that could change.

In the basketball part of the Tu Diràs program on the Catalan station, the journalist Xavi Ballesteros speaks of "a great probability" and assures that there is already "a part enabled in the project" for the case in which the transfer of the basketball section of the white club. Above all, it would be a tremendous challenge from a technical and logistical point of view but, according to this information, there are the possibilities offered by the new roof and the retractable nature of the lawn of the new Bernabéu.

The objective is obvious: to maximize the possibilities of the new stadium beyond the football team games and to be productive 365 days a year, or almost. Make it, in line with all the new pavilions and stadiums that are built in American sports, for example, a nerve center of the life of your city. With events of all kinds, including concerts or, in this case, the arrival of the basketball team. More income from tickets and other indirect concepts and more possibilities in more days of operation of the new facilities.

Real Madrid has played in the last decade at the WiZink Center, the Palacio de Deportes, where they returned after passing through other houses (Torrejón, Raimundo Saporta, Vistalegre, Caja Mágica…). There, its total capacity is 15,000 spectators, and the averages were before the pandemic at almost 10,000 in the Euroleague and more than 9,000 per game in the ACB. The information does not clarify whether the change would be total, in all matches and all competitions, or only partial, in designated matches.

In addition, the option of organizing basketball matches would open up the possibility of hosting the final stages of the Copa del Rey, Euroleague Final Four, international tournaments ... at the new Bernabéu. Marc Mundet, who leads the Tu Diràs basketball section, recalls that José Luis Sáez already thought, when he was president of the FEB, of the old Bernabéu as the venue for the 2014 World Cup final, which was finally played at the WiZink.

It would also be necessary to see what shape it would finally have and what capacity the basketball pavilion at the Bernabéu would accept, which will have a capacity for 82,000 fans. At the Eurobasket 2015, in France, the Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille was adapted, from 50,000 to 27,000 spectators. There the Spanish National Team won gold.
