Mohoric wins pairs

The Slovenian from Bahrain achieved his second victory on the Tour by finishing the escape alone, after a busy stage in which Pogacar beat two rivals.

Mohoric-wins-pairs

Eddy Merckx and Mark Cavendish embraced at the start of the stage. Mourenx is part of the Cannibal legend. And he also aspired to integrate the history of the Isle of Man racing car. There the Belgian culminated in 1969 one of the great feats of his life after an attack on the Tourmalet: 140 kilometers of escape and more than seven minutes on the next classified. And from there the route started this Friday where the Englishman had the opportunity to beat the record of 34 stage wins that both currently share.

Indeed, Cav had two bullets to overcome that stratospheric mark. Although it would be more correct to say that he had a ball and a large bullet. The balita was this stage of more than 207 kilometers ending in Libourne, where a hypothetical relaxation of the peloton was presumed, only hypothetical, after three consecutive days in the Pyrenees. The logic pointed to a pampered getaway that would relax the legs of the rest of the warriors, with the placet of the peloton or serenely controlled by the Deceuninck team, the only one with a guaranteed sprinter. There was a getaway, yes. But relax, scarce. And sprint, either. Having lost this first option, Cavendish is left with only Sunday's big bullet: the Champs-Elysees.

The script was fulfilled only in the first section, with an inaugural escape handled smoothly, but a massive crash in those initial kilometers set fire to spirits. Tadej Pogacar, with a tremendous anger, came out in the first person to neutralize a start from Michael Kwiatkowski and Toms Skujins, whom he reproached for attacking when two of his UAE Team mates, Rafal Majka and Vegard Stake Laengen, tried to rejoin the group, along with other cyclists injured in the montonera. The yellow jersey applied its own code of justice.

The atmosphere was heated with numerous attempts at adventure, attacks and counterattacks, in search of a wide escape that did not quite satisfy anyone. There was even a second montonera, which affected Enric Mas and Cavendish himself. The speed skyrocketed, to the point that the first three hours were covered at more than 48 km / h. An infernal rhythm. The waves did not stop until the break was formed, already in the second half of the route, with a score of cyclists including only one Spaniard, Ion Izagirre, and no one from Movistar, one of the six teams that failed to put in representatives up, although he sneaked Iván García Cortina, Alejandro Valverde and Jorge Arcas, who were not able to give him continuity. Except for a miracle, there will be no Spanish triumph this year either on the Tour. And it's been three years since the last one.

The breakaway was resolved with a victory for Matej Mohoric, who finished again alone, just as he had done in the seventh stage at Le Creusot. The successes of Pogacar and Primoz Roglic have eclipsed the existence of a Slovenian third killer, capable of adding two wins in the same edition of the Tour or collecting successes in the three major rounds. Mohoric crossed the finish line making the zipper gesture in his mouth. The recipient of their criticism is the open process against the Bahrain team, which was subjected to a police search at the hotel last Wednesday, in an anti-doping investigation. The winner ordered silence. Indeed, Matej, silence has almost always been the position of cycling in the face of this kind of thing.
