Crutchlow could replace Morbidelli in Austria

The Briton, current Petronas test driver, is now running as the main candidate to cover the Italian's loss at the Red Bull Ring.

After undergoing surgery for his left knee injury, Franco Morbidelli will be away from the action for at least eight weeks. The Italian made the decision, agreed with Petronas, to undergo surgery to return in the best conditions to the second half of the championship. "I underwent the surgery with a single idea in mind, to return in the best shape as soon as possible and to be able to perform 100% on the bike" declared the rider in the official statement issued by his team.

The competition will end a month and a half break to return on August 8, with the first of two consecutive appointments in Austria. And if the planned rehabilitation period is fulfilled, Valentino Rossi's partner in the Yamaha 'satellite' will be out on both dates. He was also in the last Dutch GP, replaced by the American Garrett Gerloff, rider of the private Superbike team GRT Yamaha, who finished in 17th position.

With a view to the next meeting at Spielberg, the option of using the series derivatives drivers will not be possible. Since the dates coincide with the fifth round of the World Superbike, held in the Czech Republic. Thus closes the door for Gerloff and the Turkish Razgatlioglu, who already refused to race in Assen to win the World Championship lead in Donington.

This is where the name of an old acquaintance on the grill, Cal Crutchlow, appears. The Briton, current test driver for the team, is now running as the main candidate to share the box with Valentino Rossi in Austria. This option was already contemplated in Assen, but finally it was Gerloff who got on the bike. Although nothing is confirmed, Spielberg could be the scene of the reunion between two retired veterans of the premier class. Well, everything indicates that Dani Pedrosa will be present in Austria as a 'wild card' with KTM.
