Clean and slate for De Gea

The Spanish goalkeeper has returned two weeks before vacation to show Solskjaer that he wants to compete for the title to Dean Henderson.

You will not remember David de Gea with excessive fondness the 2020-21 season. A course in which he has seen how Dean Henderson snatched the number 1 position of United and Unai Simón did the same in the National Team. A campaign with which the Madrilenian wants to make a clean slate. For this reason, he has shortened his vacation by two weeks and has already joined the Red Devils preseason, when he was expected at the beginning of August after taking part in the Eurocup.

Henderson, a youth squad for the Red Devils, after two years on loan at Sheffield United, returned to compete face-to-face with the Spaniard and went from cup keeper to Premier goalkeeper, handing over the Europa League to the Spanish international. This loss of preponderance at Old Trafford was the one that cost him the title in La Roja, a place that claimed a Unai Simón who has not been weighed by the position this summer in the continental tournament.

"David wants to get back to his best form. He could have easily taken a three-week vacation, but he knows that Hendo (Henderson) is equally focused on vindicating himself against Ole," they tell The Sun from within the club. The 24-year-old goalkeeper missed the Euro due to an injury, something that has allowed him to join the work with the Mancunian team from the beginning. Fact, the latter, which could have helped De Gea make the decision to take such a bite out of his rest time.

A decade in red

Since the Spaniard left Atleti in 2011 in the direction of Manchester, no one had managed to steal the starting position from him as Henderson has done. A decade full of individual successes, converted in several seasons into the best player on the team (and one of the best paid in the Premier), which were not accompanied by collective titles. Now that United seems to get out of the quagmire, with the signing of Sancho and the potential arrival of Varane as the icing on the cake, De Gea wants to be headlining again.
