Richard Carapaz (El Carmelo, 28 years old) disputes his second season with the Ineos jersey after three seasons at Movistar. His departure did not come on good terms. Eusebio Unzué, the manager of the telephone team, accused the representative of the Ecuadorian, Giuseppe Acquadro, of deceiving him. Since 2019 they have not worked together. Pablo Lastras, one of the directors, called him "unfair." Practically whenever Carapaz attacks, Movistar pursues. Although they hide in the defense of their interests, it seems like a vendetta. As in La Covatilla in the 2020 Vuelta, when Soler and Mas pulled Roglic and the Slovenian sentenced his second title, with the former only 24 seconds away. Richie, as he is nicknamed, is not bothered by questions on the subject, but they tire him: “We all seek the best for each other. With Movistar I offered more than what they asked of me and I did not enjoy the confidence that I have in Ineos. ”

In his second participation, Carapaz is third overall in the Tour, 5:43 behind Tadej Pogacar and four seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard, and 1:34 over Rigoberto Urán. He premiered in the 2020 edition and, after the abandonment of Egan Bernal, he became the most outstanding man of the British. His escapade with Michal Kwiatkowski ended in the Pole's triumph at La-Roche-Sur-Foron. He conquered the 2019 Giro and in the 2020 Vuelta he climbed into his second drawer in a big one, a goal to which he aspires in Paris. “The Tour is like a marathon and you don't have to give up until the last finish line. We will not stop trying, even if the opponent does not give in to our rhythm. There is only one day left in the Pyrenees and the time trial, I must make the most of myself, "he explained after finishing third in the Portet.

With Ineos he has three victories (eleven on his resume): a partial and the final classification of the Tour of Switzerland of 2021 and a stage of the Tour of Poland of 2020. "I feel that I am growing and that I can ambition goals of greater importance" . He started the French round as second captain, in the shadow of Geraint Thomas (as happened with Mikel Landa in the Giro that he won), and now everyone is rowing in the same direction: “I am excited that the most powerful structure in cycling is thus trusting me and colleagues and technicians give me their support ”. However, and despite occupying a virtual place of honor, at the moment they are not enough to disturb Pogacar ... which calls into question the "best line-up in the history of Sky / Ineos on the Tour", as defined by the manager, David Brailsford: "Things do not happen as one plans, that's why they fight, to get them" .
