"Winning a time on the Tour was a goal in my career"

Wout van Aert scored his first time trial on the Tour, his fifth victory in the French round and his seventh of the 2021 season: "I work to be versatile."

Wout van Aert achieved his fifth Tour victory in Saint Émilion, his first in a time trial, and his seventh in 2021: “It was a priority objective for me”. In this edition he finished second in a sprint against Mark Cavendish and also scored a high mountain day, with double ascent to Mont Ventoux: “I am working to become a versatile cyclist”. At 26, he seems ready to take a step forward in his sporting career, although he shares a team in the Jumbo with Primoz Roglic, double winner of the Vuelta; Tom Dumoulin, Giro champion; Steven Kruijswijk, third on the Tour; and Jonas Vingegaard, sensation of the French round of 2021 with his second place: “What a level!”

He, however, prefers to take it easy: “At the moment I am not prepared to fight face to face with the riders who aspire to the general classification in a three-week competition. In those of an equal yes. Maybe if I lose weight (1.87 and 78 kg), although my role as a squire for the leaders doesn't bother me either. In his third appearance on the Tour, he will sign his best classification, 19th, and in all three he scored victories.
