Ineos vs. slovenians

The Ineos of Thomas and Carapaz, with Porte and Tao in the chamber, present their most powerful line-up on the Tour to fight against Pogacar and Roglic.

Of the ten Grand Tour champions participating in the 2021 Tour, Ineos presents three of them: Geraint Thomas, winner of the 2018 Tour; Richard Carapaz, winner of the 2019 Giro; and Tao Geoghegan Hart, who conquered the pink jersey in 2020. In addition, Richie Porte, third in the French round last year, rounds 50% of alternatives to yellow in an eight that is completed by Castroviejo, Kwiatkowski, Van Baarle and Rowe. "These four guys are going to have some work, huh?" Thomas laughs.

At the press conference of the British team, Thomas, Carapaz, Porte and Tao spoke, in this order. Bram Vandecapelle, a journalist for the Het Nieuwsblad, asked the four of them if that's the hierarchy for the Tour. "Yes," replied the Welshman, with more jokes. "I don't think I should answer," the Ecuadorian justified himself. "I have three champions ahead, G, Richie and Tao, I even had to fall behind to fourth place," the Australian was unmarked. And the English expanded: "What order does it serve us? From the first to the last or from the last to the first? Because maybe the most important is the last and they leave it until the end so that their message can get more, I don't know. Seriously, everyone in Ineos knows that Thomas and Carapaz share the stripes, with Porte and Tao as secondary assets, but in the general, in case of mishap or fainting of the two captains.

At the age of 35, the winner of the 2018 edition evokes his victory as a "management model". Then, Chris Froome accompanied him in the drawer as third place after scoring the Giro: "For the best performance of the pieces you have to establish communication without egos, focused on getting the title for the squad. May someone from Ineos win above of everything". Carapaz (28) agrees: "Unlike in the Giro, in which we compete with a single leader, Egan Bernal, here we come with a very strong block, in which the strategy will be developed based on two people, Thomas and myself. The road and the forces will decide, while we will collaborate to find the yellow shirt and let it stay with us ".

Geoghegan Hart (26) makes his debut on the Tour with clear ideas: "I feel very happy just to be part of the eight of Ineos. I want to learn and fulfill my role to support the bosses. I debut in the career that is the origin of cycling passion for most of us, and my head thinks of nothing more than fighting the Slovenians, Pogacar and Roglic. " Porte (36) insists that the first and second of 2020 will become "the rivals to beat." And Thomas concludes: "After a 2020 in which we did not perform at our level on the Tour, we are ready to regain the throne." In the last decade, only Evans (2011), Nibali (2014) and Pogacar (2020) beat the Sky / Ineos roller.
