Hamilton responds to Red Bull

The Englishman leads the last training session in Spielberg with two tenths over Verstappen. Alonso was eighth with the Alpine and Sainz, 13th with Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton led the final practice session of the Styrian GP at Red Bull's home by two tenths over Max Verstappen, when the Dutchman had been in the lead in the previous two rounds. The rain from the night before washed the track, the teams start again and the Mercedes is on par with, or even ahead of, the leading car. Bottas was third with a certain margin over Checo Pérez, fourth, on a circuit where the differences should be smaller: the lap is around four kilometers and the lap is barely over a minute.

The surprise of the third free is Apha Tauri, with Tsunoda and Gasly one step away from the best. Fifth the Japanese, sixth the French, the Red Bull partner is on the prowl to sneak one of their cars between them and Mercedes. In addition, Bottas has three penalty positions on the grid for his incident on Friday that will limit the strategy of the Germans in the race.

Leclerc was seventh and Alonso eighth with the Alpine one second behind the head. McLaren was missing, with his two drivers at the bottom of the table, although Norris was blown 1: 05.2 that would have placed him in the top-6. Carlos Sainz also lost some of his laps due to exceeding the limits of the track, closely watched in turns 9 and 10. The Madrid native was 13th, although the sensations in long runs are good and the Ferrari should be in Q3.
