Valverde, to equal the record

The Murcian, with two victories at the Indurain GP, aspires to tie the record of three titles. A very Spanish Astana, rival to beat.

The Indurain GP will be held this Saturday with nine World Tour teams: Astana, Bahrain, BikeExchange, Cofidis, Ineos, Israel, Movistar, Trek and UAE. Alejandro Valverde, winner of the race in 2014 and 2018, aspires to open his record of triumphs in 2021 (and that of Movistar men) and tie the record for the highest number of titles, held with three Hortensio Vidaurreta, Miguel María Lasa, Juan Fernández and Ángel Vicioso. Perhaps the most Spanish Astana is presented as a rival to beat with the presence of Ion Izagirre (champion in 2016) Luis León, Fraile, Aranburu, Romo and Rodríguez (plus Lutsenko). The Cofidis, with Guillaume Martin, Jesús Herrada and Fernando Barceló will also line up a solid block.

The heights of Erául, Guirguillano and Lezáun will be translated as the main difficulties for the peloton. As the pandemic forced the 2020 edition to be suspended, the Frenchman Jonathan Hivert became the last winner in 2019. The organization will pay tribute for his career to Manolo Azcona, general manager of Kern Pharma, who returns home after leaving the Volta due to his coronavirus cases. Caja Rural, the other Navarrese team of continental category, Euskaltel and Burgos will be at the starting line.
