Suzuki has duties

The team of champion Joan Mir is considering improvements to defend the Mallorcan's crown, especially in qualifying.

Suzuki-has-duties

Ending the year savoring glory is accompanied by the illusion of a dream come true, but also by the pressure of defending the title of best driver in the world on two wheels. After several seasons with Marc Márquez fulfilling that role, now it is the turn of Joan Mir who, after a 2020 where regularity gave him his first MotoGP winding, has to deal with the condition of champion during a campaign in which The one who continues to be the great favorite for the Balearic Islands will return, and for which Suzuki adds to its pilot some pending tasks that they will try to solve as a team.

Despite the fact that the Hamamatsu brand was close to excellence during a season in which they understood very well what their mission was and in which, in addition, they knew how to take advantage of the strengths of their GSX-RR, Frankie Carchedi, Mir's chief mechanic, confirms that the goal for the new course is to continue the upward trend of a team that is, above all, a family: “The emphasis on Suzuki is above individual glory.”

From the start, the Japanese structure rules out any favoritism within its box, "Suzuki's way of acting is to improve the bike so that both riders have an advantage," explains Carchedi. They have pending tasks that they will try to solve as a group and that will also be required of Álex Rins, since Suzuki's ambition after his first title is even greater than when they announced their return to the top flight.

After such a glorious year for the brand, the most important thing will be not to accuse a pressure that they will try to avoid with a work model similar to the one they used in 2020. Every weekend they will face session by session and without looking much further. "Not having won in 2019 helped because the objective was to achieve a podium and then win a race, something that did not happen until the end," highlights Carchedi, thanks to the mentality with which they approached the year.

The qualifying challenge

With a strategy reminiscent of the cholista philosophy from game to game and well-defined objectives, the Japanese motorcycle will have a lot of prominence in what happens on the asphalt and therefore, as the British emphasizes, it will also be very important to continue working on his progression: "The grid position was one of the areas we looked at this winter, even though we have never emphasized a specific area." The reason? Because despite having been in Q2 in 90% of the classifications that were contested, the first row was only visited in two of the fourteen tests held throughout the World Cup.

"Our difficulty now is not to give up any advantage in the race, but to improve our classification", recognizes Carchedi, with the intention of achieving "a little extra for the races" although without losing sight of the whole of a project that Davide Brivio straightened out , who said goodbye to the structure after achieving glory. However, they will keep a pilot in whom they saw from day one “that he had something special”, even though not everyone believed in him. "But we do," says the Briton about a 23-year-old who is already a world champion and who has a common goal with Suzuki: to win again.
