Salah, bound for Japan; Liverpool, puzzled

Liverpool did not know that Egypt was calling up their star for the Olympics, a decision that makes them miss the preseason and the start of the 2021-2022 Premier.

Mohamed Salah is going to the Tokyo Olympics this summer. Shawky Gharib, Egypt Under-23 coach, confirmed that the Liverpool footballer is on the preliminary list as one of the surplus players to compete in Japan. Each country can enroll three professionals with no age limit in their international teams and Salah will be on the expedition.

Egypt has yet to speak to Liverpool about this decision, according to the Daily Mail. The reigning Premier champions will be without the 28-year-old forward for a significant part of the year. Problems for coach Jurgen Klopp, who has the Egyptian as one of the great threats in the English squad.

The Olympic Games postponed due to the health crisis will take place between July 23 and August 8. The Premier is scheduled to start in early / mid August. Salah, therefore, would miss the preseason and the start of the competition. After attending the Games, the Egyptian would need a rest period and a subsequent set-up to reach a competition as demanding as the English league in the best conditions.

Coach Gharib announced on Egyptian television that Mohamed El-Shennawi and a goalkeeper will accompany Salah on the Olympic adventure.
