Cortina will lead a Movistar without Valverde in San Remo

The Asturian will be Movistar's great asset for the first monument of the season. Valverde will not be there, who will prepare the Volta a Catalunya.

The Movistar team has unveiled its list of seven riders for Milan-San Remo on Thursday, the first monument of the 2021 season that will be held this Saturday over a route of almost 300 kilometers.

The Asturian Iván García Cortina, one of the great signings of the team for this season, will be Movistar's main asset for this edition. Cortina, who will contest his second Milan-San Remo after making his debut in the race last year, comes to the race after dropping out at Tirreno-Adriatico, where he managed to be Top-10 in sprint finishes at Lido di Camaiore and Gualdo Tadino.

Along with Cortina, the Movistar team will be made up of powerful runners on the plain such as Albert Torres, Lluís Mas and Nelson Oliveira as well as Gonzalo Serrano, who could surprise at the heights of the final stage, Davide Villella and Mathias Norsgaard.

It is striking that Alejandro Valverde has been left off the list. The Murcian did not participate in the 2020 edition and this time he will not race in the Classicissima either to fully focus on preparing the Volta a Catalunya, where he will lead Movistar along with Enric Mas and Marc Soler.
