Now that the Super League is on everyone's lips and after FIFA's ban on players from participating in that competition in the future. It is a good time to remember that UEFA has a new competition ready, which will come into force in July 2021. Few will remember that from the 2021-2022 season, the UEFA Conference League will be played at least during the 2021-24 triennium. A third way to play in Europe, in the shadow of the Champions League and the Europa League.

What is the Conference League?

Mainly a new competition designed by UEFA in 2018, first under the name Europa League 2 but finally under the name Conference League. It will have a rank of third European competition, behind the old acquaintances of the Champions and the Europa League. This is how Aleksander Čeferin, president of the body, explains: "The new UEFA club competition makes UEFA club competitions more inclusive than ever. There will be more games for more clubs, with more associations represented in the group stage ".

Who will play in this new competition?

A total of 184 teams will participate in the new competition throughout the season, including at least one from each of the 55 UEFA member associations and 46 from the Champions League and the League Europe. The matches will be played on Thursdays alongside those of the Europa League and will be divided in principle equally into two time slots: 6:45 pm and 9:00 pm.What will your competition format be?

It must be made clear that no team will qualify directly for this new competition. Playoffs between teams will take place until the group stage consisting of 32 participants. These will finally be the 32 teams:

-17 teams from the main route of the UEFA Europa Conference League

-5 teams from the UEFA Europa Conference League champions route

- 10 teams eliminated from UEFA Europa League play-offs

How will it affect Spain?

Spain continues to be the top federation in the UEFA ranking, therefore it has secured 6 European places plus one in the new competition. Four teams will go to the Champions League, two to the Europa League and one more to the Conference League.

But there is a nuance. The Cup champion in Spain has a place reserved for the Europa League and therefore, depending on their classification, could modify which teams finally go to each of the three European competitions. In theory, the sixth classified would go to the new Conference League and not to the Europa League as before.

And the Copa del Rey?

In Spain, the Copa del Rey champion has a place in Europe, specifically in the Europa League. Therefore, if the Cup champion already has a secure European place (for being among the top 5 in LaLiga), the sixth classified would go to the Europa League and the seventh in the league to the Conference League. It may even be the case that the winner of the Cup finishes sixth in the standings, so they would also go to the Europa League via the Cup and their place in the Conference League will be for the 7th classified (never for the finalist of the KO tournament ). However, this decision has to be ratified by the RFEF, which is the one that must decide how the European places will be distributed. The qualified Spanish team will have to play a preliminary playoff tie at the end of August to be able to play the 32-team group stage.
