Wellens shines in a breakaway with Bernal, Gilbert ...

The Belgian from Lotto Soudal left the break from 17 to 13 km from the finish line and nobody could catch him: stage and leadership. Martí Márquez (Kern Pharma), Spanish representative.

Tim Wellens showed in the third stage of the Star of Besseges how well the season starts. He conquered the broken third stage of the Estrella de Besseges and took the lead after being the strongest of the day's break, a very high quality escape with very important names. However, the Belgian, who conquered two stages in the last Vuelta, made a show of power to release his record in 2021 and place himself with great options of winning the general. The race was at a thousand an hour from the beginning and the fight to get into the good cut was titanic. Many were those who tried, and 17 who succeeded. Watch out for names: Greg van Avermaet (Ag2r), Philippe Gilbert, Tim Wellens and Stefano Oldani (Lotto Soudal), Egan Bernal and Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos), Jake Stewart and Lars van der Berg (Groupama), Clément Carisey (Delko) , Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché), Edward Theuns (Trek), Mads Schmidt (Israel), Nils Politt (Bora), Michael Golg (Qhubeka), Bryan Coquard, Cyril Barthe (B&B) and Marti Márquez (Kern Pharma). The latter, the only Spanish representative, giving continuity to the good image of Kern Pharma in this beginning of the campaign in which they are released in the Pro Continental category.

With so much quality in the group and with good understanding, the breakaway made its way and became unattainable for the peloton with the leader, Christophe Laporte (Cofidis), until this Friday. The stage was ahead and with 15 km to go, on a steep slope followed by a difficult descent, that was the moment when the breakaway broke. Michal Kwiatkowski sped up, but a scare on the descent (where it was normal to see postures on the bike that the UCI will ban) robbed him of his options.

Wellens did not hesitate and his start soon opened a gap. It was the good one, since the advantage only grew to stand alone at the goal. This Saturday, the penultimate stage, without major climbs, but with ground breaking legs before Sunday everything is decided in the final time.
