Vingegaard surprises and Pogacar resists against Ineos

The Dane from Jumbo-Visma won Jebel Jais after beating a combative Lutsenko. Pogacar managed to resist against a Yates who did not finish the work of Ineos.

The fifth stage of the UAE Tour with the final climb to Jebel Jais, the highest port in the United Arab Emirates, appeared as a new battle between Tadej Pogacar and Adam Yates for the lead of the general classification. However, the British did not manage to finish his team's work during the climb and leaves Tadej Pogacar as virtual champion of the UAE Tour after a day in which the Danish Jumbo-Visma Jonas Vingegaard gave the surprise after winning the goal of Jebel Jais after beating a fighter Alexey Lutsenko.

Mathias Frank was the first great protagonist of the stage, rolling solo on the run during the first kilometers of the stage before near kilometer 60 he was joined by a group of eight riders with the presence of Thomas de Gendt or Alexey Lutsenko among others to make way for a 3:20 lead with the peloton. The pace that Ineos put into the peloton on the final leg with Filippo Ganna made the difference drop even though De Gendt, Lutsenko, Goldstein and Frank managed to stay in the lead on the first ramps of the climb.

17 kilometers from the finish line Lutsenko surprised his fellow escapees with an attack to which De Gendt tried to respond without success and the Kazakh cyclist from Astana starred in his particular duel with the rhythm that Ineos continued to impose in the peloton with Brandon Rivera and Daniel Martinez. A march that Vincenzo Nibali accelerated to three kilometers from the finish line when he went to hunt for Lutsenko while Joao Almeida was the only one of the general favorites to move but without opening gaps. In the last kilometer, with Lutsenko broken, and with no news of a possible attack by Adam Yates, Jonas Vingegaard launched a hard attack to overcome the Kazakh to 250 meters from the finish line and achieve one of his most important victories of his career while Pogacar and Yates they entered the finish line together with the Slovenian, putting the Briton two more seconds in the general classification for the bonuses and leaving the UAE Tour general for judgment ... if the desert does not say otherwise.
