Osaka dominates

Osaka made good the odds with his victory against Brady. He has won a major a year between 2018 and 2021, something no one has done since Serena Williams.

The women's tennis, unpredictable and very open since Serena Williams decided to stop in 2017 to be a mother, has found a new dominator: Naomi Osaka. The Japanese lifted her fourth Grand Slam title this Saturday after beating Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in 71 minutes in the Australian Open final. Osaka has gone to one a year since 2018. No one since the great Serena has managed to win at least one major each course for four in a row. The last great streak of the American took place between 2012 and 2017, with 10 successes.

Osaka is the fourth active player to win at least four major trophies, behind Serena (23), Venus Williams (7) and Kim Clijsters (3). And it becomes the 12th to achieve two in the tournament during the Open Era (since 1968). It also succeeds the great Monica Seles, who did it in 1990, as the second woman to triumph in her first four Slams finals. Williams debuted her record at the 1999 US Open, but in 2001, also in New York, she fell to her sister Venus in the title match.

At 23 years old, the two-time champion of the oceanic tournament has a slightly lower rhythm than Serena, who at that age had already harvested six cups, but the similarities between the two are undeniable. Naomi, who made her idol cry on Thursday in the semifinals by cutting her way in an incontestable way, is no longer the shy girl who almost did not speak at the beginning, she has become a benchmark on the circuit with acts of vindication like the ones she starred in during the last US Open to denounce police violence against blacks in the United States. Brady recognized him at the awards show: "You are an inspiration to all of us." He has his own line of kits named after him, from the same brand as Williams, Nike. He has already been number one and with his latest triumph he rises to second place in the ranking. He is also capable of linking many victories. In fact, he has not lost for almost a year. The last player to beat her was the Spanish Sara Sorribes, who passed her 6-0 and 6-3 in the Federation Cup on February 7, 2020. Since then, and not counting her resignations before the final of Cincinnati and the semifinals of the Gippsland Trophy a few days ago, have 21 wins in a row.

The Japanese was very favorite in the final against Brady, although the Harrisburg tennis player, very commendable if one takes into account that she suffered a hard confinement of 14 in a Melbourne hotel after having been in contact with positive cases for coronavirus on a flight from Abu Dhabi kept the guy in a first set that got away with double faults and a couple of avoidable mistakes. In the second the Osaka gale passed over him, stronger than the wind that shook the Rod Laver Arena in gusts, with a 4-0 start that he later made up. The victory of the undisputed leader of the WTA circuit, which is above the irregular and discreet number one, Ashleigh Barty, eliminated in the quarterfinals, was never in danger. Only one tennis player discussed Naomi's dominance in Australia, Garbiñe Muguruza, who had two match points and served to win against her in the second round. Who knows if it was the birth of a new classic.

Calendar and Results.
