Morey: the side of the future who said no to Barcelona

The defender is one of Borussia Dortmund's sensations at 20 years old. Raised in La Masía, in 2019 he decided not to renew and make a niche for himself in German football.

Mateu Morey is one of the most promising irruptions in Spanish football beyond our league. The right-back is pure talent and a good example that in the quarry of Spanish football there is always new blood to trust. Morey has gradually made a place for himself in Borussia Dortmund's starting eleven (displacing Meunier) and is one of the most prominent of his team in recent games. One more member of the young and attractive Borussia Dortmund project.

The Balearic footballer (2-3-2000, Palma de Mallorca) joined the ranks of the German team in the summer of 2019. After a first campaign of adaptation to German football in the shadow of Achraf Hakimi. In this one he is becoming a fixture on the right side of the yellows. A starter in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Sevilla, he was also one of the highlights this Saturday in the Ruhr basin derby against Schalke. The right-back caused a theft of the ball that ended in Sancho's first goal and his evolution continues from less to more. Every time he looks more mature in his game from the right side of Terzic's team. He is a more accomplished footballer.

Morey was the European Under-17 champion in 2017 with the Spain of Santi Denia in which he formed a scandal right wing with Ferran Torres. He was the '2' of the future at Can Barça. But after proclaiming himself champion of the Youth League in 2018, leading García Pimienta's team together with Carles Perez and Mingueza, he had a 2018-2019 season to forget. Morey tore the external meniscus in his left knee, which left him in dry dock until March 2019. When he returned, a knee sprain left him blank for the entire season. And on top of that, the contract with Barça ends.

Controversial not to Barcelona

Despite his injuries, at Barcelona they wanted to keep him but Morey decided to say 'no' to the offer to renew the Catalans and look for new goals. Michael Zorch, Borussia Dortmund sporting director, knew of his talent and had already groped the footballer's environment so that he could reach the ranks of the German team free. "It was not an easy decision, but after a long period of time, and together with my family, we have made the decision to close a wonderful stage at FC Barcelona to start a new and exciting adventure." It was the farewell to Morey, who preferred to pack his bags and not continue at Barcelona. "I decided not to renew with Barça, I believed that Dortmund was the best option to grow," the right-back explained last summer at the El Larguero microphones. Morey thus slammed the door on Barcelona to the club that 'caught' him from the youth of Mallorca in 2016, aware of his great projection.

Morey has taken advantage of the physical problems of the starting full-back, Thomas Meunier, and is performing at a high level complicating the Belgian international. Borussia's offensive way of playing is perfect for Morey's conditions, which adds to his qualities a versatility that allows him to play inside on the right wing. A cannon that continues to knock down obstacles from Germany and that shines in the best showcase in the world: the Champions.
