Hezonja, without a gap at Barça, ends up at Panathinaikos

The guard, cut by the Memphis Grizzlies in December, may be entered in the Euroleague, as the deadline for new players ends this Wednesday.

Panathinaikos announced on Monday the incorporation of Mario Hezonja and wanted to thank Barça for "their excellent cooperation to complete the transfer" of the player's rights. The Croatian guard, who joined the NBA in the summer of 2015 from the Barça team, is committed to the Greek team until the end of the season. With an outside game in full swing (Cory Higgins, Álex Abrines, Kyle Kuric ...), the Croatian did not have a gap in his former team this year, which could have matched the offer of Panathinaikos to incorporate the player.

Hezonja, who will turn 26 in a few days (on February 25), arrived at Barça in July 2012 from the KK Zagreb youth academy. His first year in the Barça team was spent in the subsidiary (LEB Oro), although he played some games in the first team and even made his Euroleague debut. In the 2014-15 season he had a little more weight (against Manresa he achieved 8/8 in triples) and closed the European competition with 7.7 points on average.

That summer the Orlando Magic selected him in the draft with number 5 and in the Florida franchise he played three seasons. His best year was the third, when he finished with 9.6 points and 3.7 rebounds on average. In July 2019, the Croatian got engaged to the Blazers, where he did not finish curdling. This season he went from Portland to Memphis (in the Enes Kanter trade), where he was cut off in mid-December, before starting the season.

In recent weeks the interest in him from various Euroleague teams (CSKA, included) had been rumored, although finally it was Panathinaikos who made sure to have the player until the end of the season. In addition, you can play the Euroleague, because the registration period for new players (who have not played the competition with any team this year) does not close until next Wednesday.
