Great victory for Pedro Martínez against the executioner of Monfils

Pedro Martínez defeated Finn Ruusuvuori in four sets, who had just eliminated seed Monfils. First time reaching the third round in Melbourne.

Pedro Martínez continues his upward progression since his debut in the Grand Slams at Roland Garros 2019. On that occasion he could not pass the first round, but the following year he reached the second in Australia and the third at Roland Garros, after playing at the US Open. This Wednesday, he went to the third game in Melbourne for the first time with a victory of merit against Emil Ruusuvuori, 21-year-old Finn and 86th in the world who had just eliminated the tenth seed, Gael Monfils. The Spanish won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 and 7-6 (5) in 3h: 09 and will face Bublik or Lajovic on Friday, difficult but affordable rivals.

Martínez started the game stuck, very upset with his mistakes (11 in the first set) and with the lost opportunities against a good server against whom he could not take advantage of the five break options he had at that start. But as it happened against Nishioka, although the Japanese did dominate him from the beginning, Pedro was encouraged and came back with aggression (43 winners) and well-channeled nerves. He won the next two sets and in the fourth he got tangled up when he won 4-1 with a break at the start. Fortunately, he avoided a fifth set in the tiebreaker that did not deserve to suffer. He had met Ruusuvuori twice in Challengers, both in defeat, and he took revenge at the perfect time and place.
