Doncic leaves out Lillard

Chosen the ten players who will form the quintets in the All Star, which will finally be held. It will be in Atlanta, on March 7 and with contests.

The NBA advances towards the break (March 5-10) that divides the calendar in two in this pandemic season (the games of that second part have not yet been announced). A stop on the road where in principle there was not going to be All Star Weekend. The appointment, set for Indianapolis, was postponed to 2024. But, finally, there will be a weekend of the stars. It has already been officially confirmed. It will be in Atlanta (at the Hawks pavilion: State Farm Arena) on March 7, on a single day, with maximum health precaution measures and easy operation for television: Atlanta is the headquarters of Turner Sports. There have been many players who have criticized the event being held, even in a reduced format, but the NBA has seen it possible to maintain one of the most lucrative milestones for its television partners in its entire annual calendar.

There was no doubt that, whether or not there was an All Star Game (there will be), there would be all stars. The 24 chosen would be designated on their merits in this 2020-21 season. A question of prestige and curriculum but also, and for that reason the opposite was not raised, of money in some cases: there are players who have stipulated bonuses in their contracts depending on whether they reach that all-star condition. So the process to select the elected has been the usual one, first a popular vote that will give 50% of the points to elect the incumbents. The other 50% are distributed between specialized press (25%) and players (25%). 444 444

And from that mix of the public, journalists and colleagues, the ten headlines for the All Star 2021 come out, which are these: in the West Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks), LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers) ), Kawhi Leonard (Los Angeles Clippers) and Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets). And in the East Kyrie Irving (Brooklyn Nets), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) and Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers) .

It must be remembered that two players are chosen from the backcourt (guards and guards) and three from the frontcourt (forwards, power forwards and centers). On Tuesday, the fourteen substitutes will be announced, seven per Conference. They are also chosen with two backcourt players, three frontcourt players and, finally, two wildcards (players chosen regardless of their position). The vote of the coaches decides those substitutes. If players have to be added later to cover absences due to injury, it is Commissioner Adam Silver personally who grants those last places.Contest and match with repetition of format

Little by little details of what will be this improvised All Star 2020 will be known. There will be contests, but only one date, that Sunday, March 7. The triples and skills events will be held before the All Star Game, and the slam dunk contest at the All-Star break. There are no confirmed participants although Chris Haynes (Yahoo) has already assured that Damian Lillard will be in the triple contest.

Tim Bontemps (ESPN) advanced more details that were later confirmed. The NBA intends to maintain the tradition of choosing for each Conference the coach who was in charge of the classification two weeks before the event. So in the West it will be Quin Snyder who will take over from Frank Vogel. Interestingly, it will be the first time since 1984 that the West has been coached by the Jazz coach. Then it was Frank Layden, then the legendary Jerry Sloan never did. In the East, the favorite is Doc Rivers of the Sixers, who already led the East twice when coaching the Celtics (2008 and 2011) .

The NBA also maintains the dynamics that it has polished in recent editions. For the fourth consecutive year there will not be the classic East vs West duel. Once again two captains, the most voted player in each Conference, will choose their teams on foot. So far those that have been distributed to the other 22 (without respecting the Conferences but maintaining starters and substitutes) have been LeBron James and Stephen Curry (2018) and LeBron and Giannis Antetokounmpo the last two years. The revolutionary elam ending tested successfully last year in Chicago will also be maintained. The game will not last the usual 48 minutes but will proceed with the system that gave it spice and competitiveness last season: the first three quarters start 0-0 and the winner of each one gets a financial prize for a local NGO. Before the last quarter, the scores of the other three are added and a number of points is added to the highest figure (24, in tribute to Kobe Bryant). And it is played without a time limit until one of the teams reaches that figure that gives victory.
