Ballerini finishes off Alaphilippe's exhibition at the Omloop

The Italian from Deceuninck took the sprint of the Belgian classic. Alaphilippe, imperial, attacked and then played the gregarious. Aranburu (6th) and Movistar, among the best.

Davide Ballerini conquered the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the Belgian classic that kicked off the peacock season. A few races that are Deceuninck territory, and this was demonstrated by the formation with a new exhibition. Because its riders were the protagonists of the decisive phase of the race and managed to finish the job with a Davide Ballerini, who at 26 has already won three this year: two stages in the Tour de Provence and this classic from Flanders.

The victory of the Italian was undeniable, with a sprint in which he got to knock off his rivals after being placed by his teammates in a magnificent way. In fact, the last kilometers were controlled by the Belgian team, including a display by Julian Alaphilippe. The world champion was the first to break the race with 32 km to go, when an acceleration from Trentin at the Molenberg served as an excuse for the French to make the first selection. All while the increased rhythm and nervousness caused cuts and falls.

With this scenario, Alaphilippe began a solo ride that could not finish. Neither he, nor the group of about 14 men who were chasing him under various code names such as Trentin, Vanmarcke, Pidcock ... and two other Deceuninck in surveillance work, Stybar and Ballerini himself. But the drive of the large group led to the formation of a platoon with the best in the climb of Kapelmuur.

Movistar and Aranburu

In those last kilometers, the Spanish also wanted to be the protagonists. The Movistar, which had already sent Jakobs ahead before, saw how its leader, Iván García Cortina, was very attentive in the lead, accompanied by Gonzalo Serrano. But no more cuts would be made, and everything would be decided in a sprint from which a favorite like Kristoff was eliminated by a puncture.

On arrival, Cortina could not get into a good position and the comeback was impossible. More skill had an Alex Aranburu who did achieve a position of honor (sixth). However, nobody could cough up a huge Ballerini, who beat with authority and was accompanied on the podium by Stewart (Groupama) and Vanmarcke (Israel) .
