La Volta ao Algarve, postponed to May

The Portuguese round, scheduled for February 17-21, announced the decision to change the date due to the situation of the pandemic in Portugal.

New setback for the cycling calendar, since without having started the season yet, the peloton sees how many races are canceled or have to change dates due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The last test to have its date altered was the Volta ao Algarve, one of the races that for many riders was their season debut. The Portuguese Cycling Federation has announced this Thursday that the test will not be held from February 17 to 21, as planned, and that it will be held from May 5 to 9.

The organization thus regretted the change of date. "We are aware that expectations were created with a great sporting event. However, the general context of Portugal imposes a postponement that signals the commitment of the Portuguese Cycling Federation to the defense of public health and the motivation to offer fans a high quality race at another time of year ".

The intention of the organizers is to relocate the race from May 5 to 9. "The scheduling of the new date depends on the consensus with the teams and the partners involved in the event. In addition, it must be accepted by the International Cycling Union as it is a test included in the UCI calendar" .
