Fotis Katsikaris, announced as new coach of Unicaja

The Malaga club has announced the agreement with the Greek coach, who this afternoon will conduct his first training session at Martín Carpena.

Unicaja has made official the appointment of Fotis Katsikaris as the new green coach to lead the team for the remainder of the season and the next, with an option for both parties to end the relationship at the end of this season. The Hellenic coach thus assumes the challenge of lifting a team into a deep game and results crisis and that in recent weeks has currently become extremely complicated both in the ACB and in the Top-16 of the EuroCup.

In the domestic tournament it currently occupies ninth place, outside the playoff positions, and in the continental competition it has lost the first two Top-16 matches and is therefore two victories behind Joventut and Monaco.

Katsikaris will conduct his first training session at the Martín Carpena this afternoon, starting at 7:00 p.m. The new green coach is forced to give a twist to a squad built with many shortcomings, especially in the paint. Unicaja is put in the hands of a coach with extensive experience in the ACB, where he has directed Valencia Basket, Bilbao Basket (reached the final in 2011), UCAM Murcia, Iberostar Tenerife and Herbalife Gran Canaria.

In addition, he has coached clubs in Greece, Israel and Russia, managed the national team between 2014 and 2016 and was also Russia's coach for a few months, although he did not manage any matches. During the 2018-19 season he was part as an assistant to the technical staff of the NBA Jazz.

The club is looking for a pivot in the market

Unicaja does not intend to stay on the bench. The board of directors of the Los Guindos club also addressed this Wednesday the possibility of reinforcing the internal typesetter game with the arrival of a pivot. The green leaders are therefore working on the arrival of a man who increases the performance of the game in the paint, until now lacking. If an incorporation is confirmed, the club should withdraw from its current roster of internal players.
