Family's things

For the first time in history, this year three pairs of brothers compete in the queen class: Márquez, Espargaró and Rossi-Marini.

Without scientific evidence to prove it, the history of the Motorcycle World Championship suggests that genetics have a certain influence on the talent of riders. This is the only way to explain the numerous family sagas that have emerged in the great prizes: children who follow the legacy of their parents, brothers who compete together, cousins ...

During the 2021 season an exceptional event is to take place at the grand prix. For the first time, three pairs of brothers will share a track in the premier class. Two of them, the Márquez and the Espargaró, were already in MotoGP last year, but the arrival of Marini, Rossi's stepbrother, provokes this unusual event in terms of numbers and matches on the track. This is indeed a fratricidal fight ...

The Sarrons were the first brothers to compete together at maximum displacement. Christian, who became 250cc champion, coincided with Dominique in the 1989 500cc World Championship. The cases are numerous in different categories or periods (the Nieto, Checa, Aoki, Lowes, Roberts, Villa, Pons, Laverty, Hayden , Binder ...)

The exceptional thing about the MotoGP World Championship that will start on March 28 in Qatar is that half a dozen riders with such direct blood ties and fighting for the best result on the track, although the truth is that the expectations of each one of them seem quite craving different ...

The pair of star brothers in the history of motorcycling are the only ones who can boast world titles: eight for Marc and two for Álex. The uncertainty about his recovery continues to haunt the oldest, but we must hope that, sooner or later, he will be seen again sitting on his official Repsol team Honda. A structure that leaves the little one although to continue his apprenticeship at Honda, now in the LCR satellite structure. Marc faces the challenge of recovering his form and, who knows, with it the winding that he gave to Joan Mir in 2020; Alex should continue to evolve, already a little further away from the pressure of the HRC first team and the long shadow of his own brother, a permanent source of comparisons.

They are also repeaters like brothers in MotoGP. No changes for Aleix, which remains the fundamental pillar of Aprilia's project, waiting for its mechanics to improve in performance and reliability to demonstrate its full potential. The outlook is quite different for Pol: he leaves KTM to replace the youngest of the Marquez in the Honda factory team. An enormous responsibility but also, without a doubt, an unrepeatable opportunity for the 2013 Moto2 champion.

The great Valentino, a nine-time world champion, continues at Yamaha but now in the Petronas satellite team. From there he receives the debutant Marini, his stepbrother on his mother's side. Luca could not make the leap with the Moto2 title under his arm, but Rossi was in charge of guaranteeing him a motorcycle in the structure of the Esponsorama, with a Ducati that wears the colors of VR46.
