The Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz has been designated as the best athlete of the year in 2020 by the Association of Sports Journalists of Pichincha, central province of the country (APDP), after his performance with the British team Ineos in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Spain. The local Press Association highlighted the second place he reached in a stage as a climber in the last Tour de France and his second position in La Vuelta in a tight dispute from start to finish with the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who ended up winning the title .

'La locomotora del Carchi', as the Ecuadorian is also known, was ranked in November 2020 as the best Latin American cyclist in the ranks of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the highest body in this sport worldwide. Carapaz held the leading role during 2020, since he had closed 2019 with the title of the Giro d'Italia, but by decision of the Ineos managers he did not defend that title in the 2020 edition because they wanted him to support the teammate, Colombian Egan Bernal , in the Tour de France.

"It is a source of pride for me and my family. Seeing these compilation videos excites me a lot and makes me continue dreaming big," Carapaz stressed upon receiving the award. The APDP awarded Argentina's Fabián Bustos as the best soccer coach, who led the Guayaquil-based Barcelona to the title of champion of the Pro League. Bustos joined that club in December 2019 after winning his first title in the Ecuadorian championship with one of the cadres considered small in Ecuador, the Manta Dolphin.

The attacker Ángel Mena, who plays for the Mexican León, was designated the best Ecuadorian footballer of 2020, thanks to the title of the first division of Mexico in the recent season, and is placed as an indisputable figure with the Ecuadorian team in the first four dates of the qualifiers for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

There was also recognition for the cyclists Jonathan Narváez, winner of the twelfth stage of the 2020 Giro d'Italia, also a member of Ineos, and for Miryam Núñez, champion of the Vuelta a Colombia last November. The boxer Carlos Góngora, as World Champion last December and recognized by the International Boxing Organization (OIB), by beating the Kazakh Ali Akhmedov, in the twelfth round, of the fight carried out in the United States.
