Bernal: "My number one option is to compete in the next Giro"

The 24-year-old Colombian, winner of the 2019 Tour, explains in La Gazzetta his wishes to participate in the Corsa Rosa before the gala round.

Egan Bernal, 2019 Tour champion, faces a key season in his career. After breaking into force and dominating the calendar at the age of 22 (he conquered Paris-Nice, Switzerland, Tour and Piemonte), 2020 was a campaign with hardly any shine and weighed down by injuries. He only won in Occitania and abandoned in defense of his title in the Grande Boucle due to back problems, derived from a scoliosis in the spine. For 2021 he said he was preparing for a new attempt at the Tour, but seems to have changed his mind in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

In December, he assured in various media in his country that his objective was to regain his throne in Paris. After turning 24 on the 13th, he confirmed at La Gazzetta that his goal would be the Giro d'Italia: “I would very much like to be there, yes. I recently assured in Colombia that I was training for the Tour. But the Giro is first on the calendar, and in my head the number one option is to be at the start. It would be something special. " Bernal arrived in Europe through an Italian squad, the Androni, and he has “a special affection for Italy” .

Even so, Ineos has not made official the calendar of its leaders. Apart from Bernal, David Brailsford must square the programs of Tao Geoghegan Hart, winner of the Giro in 2020, Richard Carapaz, second of the 2020 Vuelta, Geraint Thomas, champion of the 2018 Tour, and the new signings: Adam Yates and Richie Porte, initially hired as secondary, but who also hoped to have their opportunities in one of the big three.
