Almeida: "In this 2021 season I will focus on the Vuelta"

The 22-year-old Portuguese, one of the revelations of the last Giro, in which he was leader and finished fourth overall, says he will aspire to the Vuelta.

Joao Almeida debuted in the 2020 Giro on a three-week date. And the 22-year-old Portuguese became one of the revelations thanks to his excellent performance: he wore the pink jersey for 15 days and finished fourth overall. Now he is preparing the 2021 season with his teammates from Deceuninck in Spain, and he spoke about his goals in Record, a newspaper in his country: “The focus now points to the Vuelta. What I did in the 2020 Giro was very good, but it belongs to the past. It turned out very well, yes, but that means more pressure and demands, and I am the first to demand more of myself. ”

Almeida has not yet released his record as a professional, and at this start of the campaign his name rang out strongly due to the landing of soccer agent Jorge Mendes in the representation of cyclists, with his name as one of the most prominent in his portfolio. The Portuguese played down the movement and assured that he only thinks about the road: “The noise that is generated around it does not matter if you are psyched to do your job well. I want to get my first win and perform well in the Vuelta. ”

There you will surely run into Tom Pidcock. The 21-year-old Briton, a specialist in cyclocross and a flashy signing for Ineos, confirmed his competition in the national round in his first full experience on asphalt: go to the Games and, later, the Vuelta and the World Cup. ”
