Al Attiyah and Sainz excite the Dakar with their gesture to Peterhansel

The Qatari and Spanish carried the champion on their shoulders upon arrival in Jeddah in a gesture of sportsmanship and recognition that was captured by the cameras.

Champions recognize champions. This is what Nasser Al Attiyah did with Carlos Sainz last year when the Madrilenian finished the last stage in Saudi Arabia that proclaimed him three-time champion of the Dakar Rally. And this is what Al Attiyah and Sainz have done this year with Stéphane Peterhansel.

The Madrid, who has won the twelfth stage with a time of 2h 17:33, and the Qatari, who this Friday has only been able to cut Peterhansel 40 seconds to add a new runner-up, have not hesitated a second in climbing on his shoulders to 'Monsieur Dakar' as soon as he arrived at the camp located in Jeddah, in a gesture of sportsmanship and recognition for his fourteenth victory.

No one, since the first edition of this magical race in the African desert was held 42 years ago, has been as successful as the Frenchman, who in 2021 has given a master driving lesson again. Leader since day two, Stéphane has not been the rider who has achieved the most triumphs, but he was the most consistent: he was not below the top four finishers in any special stage.
