The black year of Ineos

After defending champion Bernal's retirement from the Tour, the British team suffered Thomas' drop from the Giro. They have 13 wins, by 27 in 2019.

Geraint Thomas did not start on the fourth stage of the Giro. After his fall in the neutralized the previous day, caused by a drum, he suffered "a small fracture without displacement in the pelvis". The medical report issued by Ineos indicated that the Welshman must rest so that the injury does not get worse. Thomas regretted his abandonment: “It is very frustrating. I worked hard for this career. I did everything I could, I thought I was reaching the same level or even better than when I won the Tour (in 2018). I felt great, it is painful to end like this ”. After being left out of the lineup for the French round due to poor form (he got quite angry with his coaching staff), he set the course in the Tirreno and seemed to take off at the Giro by placing himself as the best of the favorites (third, 23 seconds his partner Ganna) before his accident on the way to Etna.

Without Thomas, Ineos' aspirations in the Corsa Rosa go through the performance they offer on the mountain Tao Geoghegan Hart (22nd, at 3:14 from Joao Almeida) and Jonathan Castroviejo (35th, at 6:31), and Filippo Ganna and Rohan Dennis in the two missing time trials (Valdobbiadene and Milan). This was confirmed by Matteo Tosatto, the team's sporting director: “Without G, we trust what the boys achieve, without pressure. There will be opportunities for Teo and Jonathan in the ascents, as well as for Filippo and Rohan in the time trials ”. And again without a reference for the general, as in the Tour after the retirement of Egan Bernal, who was defending the title. In France they solved the ballot with the success of Michal Kwiatkowski in La Roche-sur-Foron (escaped and embraced with Richard Carapaz). In Italy at least they will not have that requirement thanks to the victory and the leader jersey that Ganna wore on the opening day.

Ineos won the Tour with Bernal in 2019, finishing ninth in the Giro with Pavel Sivakov and 20th in the Vuelta with Geoghegan Hart. It reached 27 wins, for the 13 that add up to the moment in the atypical season of the coronavirus. Carapaz finished 13th in the Tour and is called to command the British squad in the Vuelta. In his preselection is Chris Froome, who does not clear the doubts about his physique and from 2021 he will wear the Israel jersey, and Egan Bernal does not appear. The British team will also have Iván Sosa, Brandon Rivera, Sebastián Henao, Andrey Amador, Michal Golas and Cameron Wurf, with Owain Doull, Christian Knees and Carlos Rodríguez from Granada as reserves.

In Spain they will try to reverse an anodyne situation for the largest budget of the peloton: 46 million euros. The structure conveys a dull image and lack of concentration inappropriate to the inventors of the bubble in cycling, which they put into practice before the coronavirus spread (with motorhomes, daily disinfection, kitchen truck, ban on high-fives ...) . They even registered a positive from an auxiliary on the first rest day of the Tour. "We know that things are not going as we would like in 2020," says manager David Brailsford with a certain tone of self-criticism.
