Škoda and cycling: a love story from day one

The Czech brand was born thanks to the production of bicycles. 125 years later, it is fixed in La Vuelta and the Tour, among other cycling events.

When the word Škoda is pronounced it must be directly related to the world of cycling. This should be the case because, although the Czech brand's cars are a reference for many users, the bicycle has accompanied it since its origins.

The beginnings of the brand, closely linked to the bicycle

It all began in 1894, when a 26-year-old could not get the parts necessary to fix his bicycle. It was then that Václav Klement, as this enterprising bookseller was called, decided to open his own bicycle repair shop. And for this, he enlisted the help of an experienced manufacturer of this two-wheeler, Václav Laurín.

The two began this adventure in 1895 with the opening of a small workshop, with five employees, in the city of Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic (formerly Austro-Hungary). It was there that the business began to grow and a year later up to five models of the SLAVIA bicycle were already on the market, featuring its anthracite black frame finish, unique geometry, exceptional seatpost and retro white-band tires.

The love for the bike of the two Škoda founders did not stop there and during the following years they continued to innovate in a wide range of models, from those adapted for children and women to tandems. Not forgetting chain or axle drive bicycles and even tricycles.

In the following decades came the motorcycle, the automobile, the crisis of the First World War and the union with French owners, which gave rise to the giant Škoda based in Pilsen (Czech Republic). From that moment to the present day, the green brand has continued to innovate until it has become a fixture in the world where it was born: cycling.

Škoda, present in the cycling peloton

Since 2011 it has been an official partner of La Vuelta a España and this year it will celebrate its sixth edition by sponsoring the green jersey of the event, which rewards the cyclist who gets the most points. In this classification, the finishing position is taken into account more than the time dedicated to it.

Y is that Škoda's association with professional cycling dates back to 2004 when it became an official partner, official vehicle and sponsor of the Tour de France White Jersey, which honors the best youngster in the peloton. Now, in addition, as in La Vuelta, it sponsors the green jersey of the French race; national events, such as the Orbea Monegros or the Titan Desert; and international tests.

At Škoda, over all these years, they have earned the trust of cycling teams and their members. Many of them use vehicles of the Czech brand (mostly the Superb and Superb Combi) to accompany, direct their cyclists or carry material thanks to their habitability, equipment, reliability, technology and safety. And all these qualities at very competitive prices.

An editorial project for the entire cycling community

Finally, we must not forget the editorial project We Love Cycling, a digital platform where content is generated for cycling lovers worldwide and that hosts the Strava profile, where challenges are generated for the entire community.
