Ganna: "It was tough, 82 kilos uphill is hard to carry"

The Italian achieved his second victory in five stages of this Giro d'Italia. "I thought ok Pippo, full throttle and to the end." It is world gold in time trial.

Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos), winner of the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia, described his solo victory at Camigliatello Silano as "incredible", a triumph with which he fulfilled a wish of his Welsh teammate Geraint Thomas, who had to remove after a fall. "Yesterday I was sending a message to Geraint Thomas and he said: 'Hey Pippo, you have to try to win another stage'. Today I tried and it is an incredible victory for me and for the team," he said.

The 24-year-old world time trial champion is a cyclist of great physical weight, and 1.93 meters tall, but in the Valico di Montescuro he climbed as the best climbers. "It was very hard because 82 kilos are not easy to move uphill. I made a great time to the finish. On the radio they did not give me times of the others, I was thinking: 'ok Pippo, full throttle and until the end."

Almeida: "I wanted to show that I'm not just sitting on the bike"

Portuguese Joao Almeida (Deceuninck Quick Step), leader of the Giro d'Italia, was "relaxed" after reaching third place in the fifth stage of the Giro and increasing his differences in front of the general. "I was feeling good. I think it was a good day. In the end I had good legs and I wanted to compete for the best possible position to show that I am also here for that and not just to sit on the bike. I will give everything I have until the final, "he stated.

Almeida, 22, leads the Giro standings 43 seconds ahead of Spain's Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) and 48 seconds ahead of Dutch Wilko Kelderman (Sunweb). During the stage this Wednesday, the Portuguese benefited from the fall that lost time to the second overall, the Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo.

"I knew that Jonathan Caicedo had fallen, so I was relaxed. Now I have a good hole, so I am calm. I am sure that the pink jersey strengthens me mentally. It gives me confidence and is always an extra motivation," he said.
