What can Sainz do in Monza from third place?

The Madrilenian starts behind Hamilton and Bottas in the Italian GP (3:10 pm). The strategy, the rivals and the expectations: "I'm going to give everything to defend myself."

Good qualifying results are held on Saturday, but points are shared on Sunday. Carlos Sainz starts third in the Italian GP, now what? It is a great opportunity to score points, many of which have escaped with the mistakes and problems of previous races. Defending the position seems almost impossible against Max Verstappen's Red Bull, but a lot can happen at Monza, it is a circuit with critical points such as the braking of the first chicane. And it is always better to start from the second row to fight for places of honor, that is the goal of the Madrid native and McLaren.

AS asked Sainz directly: who is he running against in Monza? "It is a surprise to be in front of Red Bull and Renault because in the long runs they seemed faster. Although we already know that our car revives when we discharge gasoline. In the race it is true that Verstappen is the only one who can hold the pace of Mercedes and to stop It is impossible for us to do that. If he has the same rhythm as always it will be difficult to keep him behind. With Ricciardo it is different because it depends on his position. It will be complicated with both. Racing Point is a question mark, sometimes they fly and sometimes they suffer more. We start from one position very good and we are going to try to keep them there knowing that Verstappen and Renault will be very, very tough rivals ".

Pérez comes fourth, Verstappen fifth and Norris, who is ally, sixth. The biggest rival at the start must be the Dutch because they have the pace to at least chase the Mercedes. At the exit, however, Sainz looks towards Bottas. The best defense is the attack: "Our starts are usually good and we always face them on the attack, it is what works for me and I will not change it depending on who is in front. From then on we will have to defend ourselves. The Red Bulls will have at least two tenths a lap less than us and it is enough to overtake or complicate things for you ".

Mercedes is unattainable, they are in another movie. Beating the Red Bulls seems unlikely, but if there is a circuit where you can try, it is Monza. They suffer with less power than their rivals and have also had trouble finding grip in the corners. Sainz is realistic, as always: "I'm going to give everything I have to fight for the position. We'll see what happens, but at least I'm happy with my feelings in the car. I don't want to generate expectations because the race is very long." A fourth, or fifth, would already be good results considering how the season has developed.

Seidl: "You can overtake a Mercedes at the start"

The strategy in this grand prix does not offer many alternatives: everyone will start with the soft and switch to the middle from the twentieth lap. Anything that isn't a single stop is a surprise and a slower option too. Andreas Seidl, team boss, agrees with the driver: "It will not be different from other races, we usually make good starts and we will try again to overtake the cars in front of us. You can overtake a Mercedes at the start, although there will be to find the balance between fighting them and not missing benefits at the end of the race. " From the first lap: "We will never underestimate Max's Red Bull in racing, it will be difficult to keep him behind. We will try the same with Pérez and the Renault. The important thing, in the end, is to maximize the weekends in terms of strategy , pit stop, or even overcome the first lap. We can score good points, it is in our power ".
