Van de Beek: "Everything was closed with Real Madrid"

The brand new signing of Manchester United regrets that his signing was cut short last summer because "players who were going to leave the team stayed behind and Madrid backed down."

The Dutch footballer Donny van de Beek acknowledged on Thursday that he reached an agreement with Real Madrid to sign for the Spanish club last summer and that he was disappointed when the opportunity escaped him.

"Everything was closed with Real Madrid and the clubs also had an agreement, but for some reason it did not materialize. Players who were going to leave the team stayed behind and Madrid backed down," explained the footballer in an interview with the Dutch newspaper "De Telegraaf" .

After the failed negotiations, the international considered his future. "At first you feel fed up and wonder if such an opportunity will appear again," he said.

Manchester United announced on Wednesday his signing for the next five seasons with the option to renew for one more, in an operation for which his previous team, Ajax, has received 39 million euros plus five in variables.

The English club was not the only one who was interested in him. "I chose with my feelings, it is what I have done throughout my career. Money was not a problem because with all the teams that showed up, I did not have to worry about that," he explained. The imminence of the transfer and the fear that a last-minute injury would frustrate the transfer led Ajax to take extreme measures. According to the Dutch newspaper, the club kept Van de Beek locked up in a hotel room for almost two days so as not to take risks and did not summon him for the friendly played last Saturday at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

"Manchester United is a dream, and of course a great club in the best league in the world. I didn't have to think about it for a second when the opportunity presented itself," said the player of his new team.
