Valverde, Landa, Mas and Soler, in the World Cup pre-list

Pascual Momparler has announced this Monday the pre-list from which the eight cyclists who will compete in the Imola World Championships (24-27 September) will come out.

The Spanish cycling coach Pascual Momparler has offered this Monday a pre-list of 17 riders from which the eight cyclists who will represent Spain in the cross-country test of the Road Cycling World Cups, which will be held from September 24 to 27 in the Italian city of Imola.

Given the demanding layout of the 28.8-kilometer Imola circuit, which will have to complete nine laps for a total of 5,000 meters of elevation gain, Momparler has decided to include in this pre-list runners who defend themselves well in the mountains and on heights and that, in many cases, they will arrive at the World Championship in good shape after having participated in the Tour de France or other races prior to the World Cup event.

Movistar and Astana are the teams that contribute the most runners to the pre-list with five each, highlighting the presence of Alejandro Valverde, Enric Mas, Marc Soler, Luis León Sánchez or Gorka Izagirre, among others. Also on this list is Mikel Landa and his Bahrain-McLaren Pello Bilbao teammate, who could defend themselves well on this type of terrain.

In the next few days, Pascual Momparler will reveal the final list of eight cyclists who will try to find the rainbow jersey on September 27 on the demanding route of Imola.

Pedersen will not defend the rainbow jersey

Mads Pedersen, current world road champion, will not defend the rainbow jersey in Imola on the 27th, as he considers the circuit "too difficult" for him, as announced by the Danish Federation.

Pedersen, currently competing in the Tour de France in the Trek Segafredo jersey, won last year at Harrogate, Yorkshire, ahead of Italian Matteo Trentin.

Without Pedersen, the Danish team will form a team around 35-year-old Jakob Fuglsang, winner of the 2019 Liege-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy last August.

"The course is well suited to cyclists who shine in the Ardennes classics, and Jakob Fuglsang is one of them. He did the Tirreno-Adriatico to prepare and continues with training at altitude. He has a specific plan and follows it" commented coach Anders Lund.

In the time trial scheduled for the 25th, Denmark will line up Kasper Asgreen and the three-time world champion in the discipline in the sub-23 category Mikkel Bjerg.
