Pletórico Davidovich: to the second round

The 21-year-old Spaniard reached a Grand Slam round of 16 for the first time in his career after beating Britain's Cameron Norrie.

Alejandro Davidovich, world number 99, continues to overcome barriers in this edition of the US Open. The Spanish continues to show why he is one of the biggest bets for the future (and present) in national and world tennis. At 21 years old, the Malaga-born reaches his first round of 16 in a Grand Slam (he has only played two other major majors, and this is his first US Open). To do this, Davidovich beat Briton Cameron Norrie in a very serious match 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2 and 6-1.

Alejandro had studied Norrie, world number 76, to perfection. The second time the Brit served, Davidovich broke his serve and left his letter of introduction in the match. Despite the good start, the man from Malaga ended up suffering in the first round. Norrie came within two points of snatching the set from Davidovich. But the Spanish reset at the beginning of the tie break. His mentality changed, he was much more daring and decided to work the points, which he slowly elaborated, imposing his physique, to end up making the Briton desperate and clearly taking the sudden death of the first set.

Norrie was not intimidated in the second set. He learned to control his nerves and took advantage of the few opportunities that Davidovich gave him, who forgave several break balls in favor. The British game improved and this time he did materialize his superiority. Again, second reset in the same game for the Spanish. And this was final. Despite breaking down in the third set, Davidovich broke the serve of a desperate Norrie three times in a row and was beginning to suffer a bloodbath of unforced errors (57 throughout the match) .

He quickly closed the match in the fourth set. Up to 18 occasions Davidovich had to break the serve of the left-handed Norrie, whom he knew how to tame completely in the decisive moments. The Malaga rival in his first round of 16 of a Grand Slam will be the winner of the Zverev-Mannarino. Davidovich continues to dream wide awake at 21 years old, who is the first Spaniard who, at that age, plays a round of 16 in a major since Rafa Nadal did it at the 2008 Australian Open. There is nothing.

Mertens, too much for Sorribes

Spanish Sara Sorribes was eliminated in the resumption of their second-round match, suspended yesterday by rain. The Castellón team started with a set behind in this restart, and her rival, Elise Mertens (16th seeded), asserted her status as favorite in the second heat played this Friday to win 6-3, 7-5. Sorribes fought, and was about to force the tiebreaker set, but when he served for it, he could not keep his serve. The same thing happened two games later, handing the victory to Mertens. With the elimination of Sorribes, added to yesterday's losses from Muguruza and Bolsava, the women's team is left without Spanish representation in the third round of the US Open.

Results of the day.
