Hirschi debuts in a big way

The 22-year-old Swiss had already been second in Nice, third in Laruns ... And, finally, winner in Sarran. Soler tried his luck and Herrada finished fifth.

Marc Hirschi. This time yes. The Swiss Sunweb, the 2018 U23 world champion, wins alone in Sarran. He had already been second in Nice, third in Laruns ... Especially painful was his defeat last Sunday in the Pyrenees, after riding 89 kilometers alone, risking his skin in the descent of the Marie Blanque ... He had pursued the victory with determination. At last justice was served. The third time came the charm.

Hirschi had once again marked this mid-mountain stage through the Massif Central in red in the road book, with a positive cumulative difference of almost 4,000 meters, which is practically equivalent to a stage of great peaks. The Sunweb marked a point on the track to plan a joint attack, with Andersen and Benoot as pitchers. Both put him on the path at the Croix du Pey and the Swiss finished it off at the Suc au May with his overflowing class, not without risk. The last port brought it back to the limit. Hirschi transmits great emotions, just like his countryman from Bern and current manager: Fabian Cancellara.

The profile of the stage augured another script, which was not fulfilled. A large and spoiled getaway was expected to play for the victory while the roosters solved their own problems. This was understood, among others, by two Spaniards: Luis León Sánchez, a stage hunter in this type of terrain, and Imanol Erviti, the guy for everything. They both got into a giant breakout, with Walscheid, the highest on the Tour at 1.99 meters, Politt and Asgreen, 1.92. They themselves measure 1.86 and 1.89, which is not bad for riding a bike either. The French Burgaudeau lowered the average with 1.68. For a basketball game it would have been an advantage, but on a 218 kilometer stage of the Tour, the longest of this edition, and with four ports, it was not much use. And less when behind, the Bora had no intention of allowing this joy.

The peloton had made other plans, which was to gamble in the last two ports of the day. The Croix du Pey, third, 4.8 km at 6%, selected a group with some illustrious names, among them Marc Soler, and Schachmann, the one who was hit by a car in the middle of Milan-San Remo, thus finishing off the Bora work. Sunweb had also launched a conscientious team attack, with Anderssen and Benoot pulling on Marc Hirschi, who had already brushed past victory twice. Pure class. On the second day of the race he already resisted an attack by Alaphilippe to finish second, and in the Pyrenees he succumbed in an agonizing finish to Pogacar and Roglic to qualify third in Laruns. Whoever follows her, pursues her.

The talented Hirschi launched his attack in the Suca au May, second, 3.8 km at 7.7%, the trap of the day, which was crowned just over 25 kilometers from the Sarran goal. The Swiss crowned with 17 seconds over Soler and Schachmann. And further back a prestigious group was formed, which went to 40 ”, with Alaphilippe as captain general, plus Herrada, Bilbao, Rolland, Reichenbach, Elissonde ... The peloton crossed at 1:21 and let themselves be carried away. To yours. The pursuers merged, but never had a chance to capture the Helvetian, who was wasting class and increasing the advantage with each pedal stroke. A star is born.
