Granollers renounces individual and Munar retires against Thiem

Marcel Granollers, who had entered the tournament because of Paire's positive, wants to go for the doubles title with Zeballos. Munar was injured when he lost 2-0 to Thiem.

Marcel Granollers, who had entered the singles table thanks to the withdrawal of Benoit Paire (positive for COVID-19), decided to renounce his participation on Tuesday in order to focus on the doubles championship, in which he has serious aspirations for the title with Argentine Horacio Zeballos (4th in the world in the pair ranking). In fact, they are both the tournament's number five seeds.

The Granollers square will be occupied by the American Ernesto Escobedo, the next highest ranked doubles player in the individual table with no place in the table (as there is no previous phase, only those from the doubles table can be alternative players if there are casualties). He will be the one who faces the Polish Kamil Majchrzak, who has already seen his rival change twice.

Munar retires due to injury to Thiem

A shame what happened to Jaume Munar in his match against Dominic Thiem, second favorite of the tournament and who reached the US Open after clearly losing to Krajinovic in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. The Spaniard, who had pushed a lot of Austrian añl in the first set (7-6 (6)) and at the beginning of the second, suffered a fall on the court just at that time, due to an imbalance, and hit his knee, which which made playing diminished from there. Thiem won the second set 6-3 and the Spaniard decided to end his participation in the tournament. The world number three will face the Indian Sumit Nagal on Thursday.
