Giroud: "I didn't sign for Lyon so as not to trigger a controversy with Benzema"

The French forward gave an interview on the occasion of the launch of his autobiography and confirmed that he was able to return to Ligue 1 in January.


Olivier Giroud is currently experiencing a splendid moment as a player. The forward has regained confidence with Lampard at Chelsea, he is the reference of the current world champion and today his first book in the form of an autobiography has gone on sale. In an interview with Le Progrès on the occasion of the launch of his first literary work, the French international confirmed that he was able to sign for Lyon in January, but that the controversy with Benzema prevented him.

"In January there were contacts with Olympique Lyonnais. Unfortunately, I was not able to sign with them because I did not want a controversy to break out around Karim Benzema, as OL was the team that saw him born. Unfortunately, he did not want to run no risk for my family when I saw the reactions of some ", Giroud assured Le Progrés.

Giroud will turn 34 at the end of September and, since Benzema was expelled from the national team in 2016 due to his controversy with Valbuena, the Chelsea striker has established himself in the position of the French team.
