Galician Veloso, first leader in Portugal at age 40

The one from W52-FC Porto prevailed in the prologue of the Portuguese round and donned the first leader's jersey in the town of Fafe. The locals Reis and Mestre completed the podium.


The veteran Galician cyclist Gustavo Veloso (W52-FC Porto) has been placed leader of the Special Edition of the Votla to Portugal after winning today the prologue stage held in the city of Fafe. The stage was contested by means of a 7-kilometer individual time trial in which the 40-year-old Spanish runner set a time of 9 minutes and 39 seconds.

The Portuguese cyclist Rafael Reis (Feirense) invested one more second in the route so he took second place and the podium was completed by another Portuguese, Daniel Mestre (W52-FC Porto), also one second behind the Spanish.

The tenth best time in the clock was for the Spanish runner Vicente García de Mateos, with a time of 9 minutes and 51 seconds. This Saturday, 14 teams from Portugal, France, the United States and Spain took the start, including Caja Rural and Burgos BH. This Monday the first stage will be held and will have two third category ports between the cities of Montalegre and Viana do Castelo.
