Pablo Carreño culminated a round day for Spanish tennis in the men's draw at the US Open. The Asturian joined Alejandro Davidovich as the two national tennis players in the round of 16 of the tournament (Roberto Bautista can also enter tomorrow). For this, Carreño was much superior in his match against the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, who won 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. The one from Gijón returns to the round of 16 of the New York tournament for the first time since 2017 (edition in which he reached the semifinals) .

In his second consecutive game of less than two hours (recovering from the beating of the first day, when he needed five sets and more than three hours), Carreño handcuffed Berankis from start to finish. He severely punished the Lithuanian's second serve (only 39% of points won with second serve) and was imperial to the rest (7 breaks, for 6 service games won by Berankis). Despite an atypical start, in which he gave up his first two serves, Carreño was able to recover and from then on he put on the automatic pilot that he already showed in his last match. The other two sets had little history, in which the man from Gijón never lost concentration and was very solid, eliminating the Lithuanian for the second consecutive year (in 2019 he did so in the second round) .

Wait for the winner of the duel between Djokovic and Struff in the second round. The Serbian disputes his third round match this Friday, and if he wins he would meet Carreño, who continues to prove to be one of the most regular players on the circuit: it is the fourth consecutive year in which he has reached the second week of a Grand Slam. In addition, Pablo is one of the seven tennis players who, in the last four years, has added 30 or more victories and has finished within the top-30 each year (Djokovic, Nadal, Thiem, Zverev, Bautista Agut and Isner are the other six ). Now, Carreño reaches the next phase at a good time, showing maturity and willing to give the bell to the world number one.

Results of the day.
