The Croatian Mate Pavic and the Brazilian Bruno Soares were proclaimed doubles champions of the United States Open on Thursday by beating Dutchman Wesley Koolhof and another Croatian, Nikola Mektic, 7-5, 6-3. Pavic and Soares won their first Grand Slam title in partnership after one hour and 31 minutes of play on Arthur Ashe Center Court.

The brand-new champions left four former Open champions on their way to the title. The 38-year-old Soares, 27th in the world doubles rankings, won the 2016 Australian and US Opens alongside Britain's Jamie Murray. Pavic won the 2018 Australian Open with Oliver Marach of Austria.

"It means a lot. That's what we train for. That's what we were trying to do in these five months off, working for this moment," Soares said after the match. Both tennis players won a prize of $ 400,000. Koolhof and Mektic, meanwhile, received $ 240,000.
