Bernal moves, Andersen wins

The Dane surprised a disorganized squad by the final two levels, in which the current Tour winner was seen, wanting revenge.

Soren Kragh Andersen, a 26-year-old off-roader, stunned the peloton on the streets of Lyon and was crowned victorious on the 14th stage of the Tour de France after a three-kilometer attack that dismantled the surviving sprinters. Andersen thus achieved the second victory for the Sunweb team, after the one won two days earlier by the Swiss Marc Hirschi in Sarran. The Dane debuted as the winner in a grand round, although he already had victories in prestigious races such as Paris-Tours 2018, or stages in the Tour of Switzerland and Paris-Nice. Behind, 15 seconds behind, the Slovenian Luka Mezgec led a disorganized peloton by the two tacks that were concentrated in the last ten kilometers and by the shaking that the Bora hit the sprinters' teams again throughout the journey.

Indeed, the Bora once again tortured Sam Bennett, who suffers on every slope, no matter how small. He was already squeezed in the first hauls at the fourth category Château d'Aulteribe, with his sights set on the intermediate sprint at Courpiére, just six kilometers later. Peter Sagan crossed third, only behind the two escapees Stephan Kung and Edward Theuns, and the green jersey passed three places behind. First duel won on points. The next climb, Col du Beal, a much more selective second, followed the same trend. The Bora tightened the pace to martyr Bennett, who suffered surrounded by his teammates. The pulse continued later on the plain. Bora vs. Deceuninck. Sagan vs. Bennett. Until the Belgian team gave up. Second duel won. This time by KO.

The screening of the Bora had not only annulled Bennett, but also other pure sprinters such as Caleb Ewan and Cees Bol. If nobody prevented it in the last two heights of fourth, the fly was reserved for another profile of fast man, represented by Van Aert, Mezgec, Trentin and Sagan himself. But there was someone who prevented it. The two ascents, already through the streets of Lyon, full of public despite the closed door announcement, provided a great show. First, Benoot. Later, Kämna, pushed by the work of the Bora and by his defeat the day before. The German was neutralized by De Gendt and Alaphalippe, who spurred on the roosters. Egan Bernal got on the wave and there Roglic had to answer, in the first person. The hyperactive Hirschi was also seen. Once the impetus of the captains had stopped, in that small stop that always occurs after the battle, Kragh Andersen started. There were three kilometers to go. And he stole everyone's wallet.

A beautiful finish that left the fertile ground for Sunday, which many point to as the queen stage of the 2020 Tour, with the permission of Col de la Loze. Two first-class passes, the Selle de Fromentel and the Biche, will be climbed before tackling the colossus of the day: the Grand Colombier, 17.4 kilometers at an average gradient of 7.1%, in the Jura Massif. A stage. Egan Bernal, the loser of the day before at the Puy Mary, showed his claws in Lyon to send a resounding message to Primoz Roglic. No one gives up here.
