Bautista is very solid to return to the third round

The one from Castellón knew how to tame a very aggressive Miomir Kecmanovic, who even won him a set. Roberto Carballés, eliminated after losing to Wolf.

Roberto Bautista continues with a firm step in his experience in this US Open. If in his first round match he managed to get rid of the curse he had in this tournament (eliminated in the first round the last two years), now he has shown how to recover in moments of doubt. His rival, Miomir Kecmanovic, only 21 years old, did not make it easy for the Spaniard. The Serbian's style of play, who stood out in the junior category, is similar to that of his compatriot Novak Djokovic, whom he idolizes and with whom he maintains a good relationship. He has even trained alongside him, and also did it with Federer, so the young man has had exceptional guides.

Bautista started the game looking very solid with his serve, trying to avoid the continuous attacks of Kecmanovic, who was very aggressive. The Spaniard lost his first chances to break the Serbian's serve, and even had to defend against two break points against. Finally, on the fifth opportunity, Bautista was able to break Kecmanovic's serve in the sixth game of the match, and from there the balance of the first set was in favor of Roberto, who closed it with 6-3.

He was not as effective in the second set, against a Kecamnovic who continued to play very aggressively and improved his serve (5 aces in the second set). Bautista was not comfortable and opportunities to break the service of the world number 47 did not come. In addition, his effectiveness with the first serves dropped, and the Serbian got the break in the eighth game. Bautista tried, but missed three break opportunities and eventually lost the second set, giving up his first set in the tournament.

The Spaniard quickly reacted, who recovered his best first serve and knew how to dominate Kecmanovic's strong attacks, waiting for the failures of the Serbian to arrive, who noticed his little experience in these tournaments (it is his sixth Grand Slam of his career) and began to err too much to end up despairing. Bautista took the third set by a solvent 6-3, and repeated this solid version in the fourth set to take it 6-4. Roberto continues advancing in the US Open and adding many points for the ATP ranking (he was eliminated in the first round last year), in which he is already, virtually, 10th. In the third round, which he has not reached since 2017, Bautista will face the winner of the Canadian gunboat duel between Pospisil and Raonic.

Carballés, surpassed by Wolf

The Spanish representation at the US Open lost a new player this Thursday after the defeat of Roberto Carballés. The Tenerife native faced JJ Wolf, also 21, for the first time. The American arrived at the tournament thanks to an invitation from the USTA, and in his first participation in a Grand Slam he is already in the third round. Wolf, who debuted in an ATP tournament at the Cincinnati Masters 1,000, proved to be a player to be reckoned with for years to come.

The game started in the worst possible way for Carballés, who gave up his first services, and it was already impossible to save the first set. In the second set the reaction of the Spanish seemed to arrive, who went ahead 3-0, but two new breaks of service by a very aggressive Wolf, with a somewhat anarchic game at the same time as joyful, again tipped the balance for the North American . Fully delivered, Carballés was unable to prevent Wolf's victory in the last set. Witnessing the game was his friend Alejandro Davidovich, who tomorrow against Cameron Norrie will have the opportunity to get into the round of 16 for the first time in his career.

Results of the day.
