Basketball Super Cup 2020: schedule, schedules and teams

The first tournament of the season in Spain begins this Saturday 12 in Tenerife. Baskonia, Madrid, Barça and Iberostar will fight for the title.

Basketball starts again this weekend at the Santiago Martín pavilion in La Laguna (Tenerife) with the 21st edition of the Endesa Super Cup and one week before the start of the national championship. TD Systems Baskonia (champion of the Endesa League), Real Madrid (champion of the Copa del Rey), Barça (runner-up in the League) and Iberostar Tenerife (host) will be the four participants of a tournament that will be played for the third time in the Islands Canary Islands, but for the first time in Tenerife.

Madrid is the last winner. The white team lifted the trophy in 2019 for the second year in a row at the WiZink Center in the capital after defeating Barça in a final punctuated by the debut of Niko Mirotic with the Barça shirt. In a tense and highly charged atmosphere, Laso's men won the sixth Super Cup in their history, tying with the Catalans in the record (they have not won since 2015). Baskonia, which was absent in last year's edition, is the third club in the ranking with four titles, all of them consecutively from 2005 to 2008. Tenerife, meanwhile, debuted in the Super Cup.

Venue and format of the 2020 Endesa Super Cup

The Endesa Super Cup will be held for the first time in its history at the Santiago Martín Sports Pavilion of Tenerife. The image that its stands will show will also be unique: almost all of its 5,100 seats will be empty due to COVID-19. Players, coaches, managers, members of the ACB and the press will be the only ones who will see the matches in the pavilion in principle.

The Santiago Martín was inaugurated in 1999 in the Tenerife municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Iberostar Tenerife makes its normal life in the pavilion: it plays, trains and has its offices there. It is made up of four floors and has hosted different sports World Cups, concerts and meetings of different kinds.

The format of the Super Cup is the same as in the last 14 years: two semi-finals and a final. The first will be played by Baskonia and Barça and the second by Madrid and Tenerife. The winners will face off in the title match. Unlike other editions, this time there will be no triple contest, which has been held without interruption since 2012.

The four teams of the 2020 Endesa Super Cup TD Systems Baskonia

Make way for the Endesa League champion! Ten years after lifting their last league title, Baskonia took the fourth of their history in an unprecedented final phase in Valencia, in a Fonteta empty by the coronavirus, but with a common denominator to the won in 2010: Dusko Ivanovic. The Montenegrin landed in Vitoria in December 2019 to face his third stage in a club that showed signs of exhaustion after a decade without scratching the glory.

La Liga was a balloon of oxygen to revive a project that has been left without Tornike Shengelia, his flagship: the Georgian center after a lifetime in Baskonia changed the Basque Country for Moscow. An absence of leader that the Argentine Lucas Vildoza, MVP of the final, and the Lithuanian Rokas Giedraitis must occupy. The forward, from Alba Berlin and second highest scorer of the preseason (18.3 points on average), is the star signing for this season. Alec Peters (Anadolu Efes) and Tonye Jekiri (ASVEL Villeurbenne) are the other new arrivals. The last, Khadeen Carrington (MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg) was cut before the start of the Super Cup.

Real Madrid

Confusing moment at the White House. Madrid faces the 10th edition of the Laso era with the unknown Facundo Campazzo. I mean, a drama. The Argentine has decided to migrate to the NBA, but the delay in the opening of the North American free agency due to the coronavirus puts his departure on hold. It may not even happen. But the whole course depends on the solution of a conflict that would leave the white team without its main star with the Endesa League and the Euroleague at full capacity, and the market without bases of guarantees to replace it ... waiting for what is discarded at across the Atlantic.

Apart from the Campazzo affair, which conditioned the non-arrival of Ante Zizic, Madrid maintain their already traditional pillars. Llull, Rudy, Carroll, Taylor… veterans with still a lot of basketball in their hands and in their heads, who have been joined by two young stars of the ACB: Alberto Abalde and Carlos Alocén. The Galician forward landed in the capital from Valencia after payment of his termination clause and the Aragonese base had already signed with Madrid last year (last season he played on loan at Zaragoza). Sabia new for a change of cycle that is also supported by such promising youth players as Garuba and Nakic. And, of course, in Tavares. Never forget the African giant.

Year II of the Mirotic Empire. A vital year for the millionaire Barça project after running dry of titles last year. In the League they were finalists against Baskonia and were third when the Euroleague stopped. The Cup was their worst experience: they fell in the quarterfinals against Valencia. A bad balance for a squad in which Mirotic, Davies, Higgins, Delaney, Claver, Heurtel came together… The accusing finger went to Pesic and the great Lithuanian hope, the desired Jasikevicius, has arrived to direct the boat. The excuses are over.

The Barça players have made little difference in the market… although their net caught one of the most attractive fish in the Euroleague: Nick Calathes. The point guard arrives to accompany Heurtel at the controls of one of the most dramatic positions for Barça last year due to the constant accumulation of injuries. The Greek is the icing on the cake for a super team built to dominate Spain and Europe.

Iberostar Tenerife

Much more than just a host of the Super Cup. Since reaching the Endesa League in the summer of 2013, Iberostar Tenerife has grown to be considered one of the most important teams in the competition, already with three international titles to its name: one FIBA Champions League and two Intercontinental titles. And all, under the baton of Txus Vidorreta, who starts his fifth season at the Canarian club, the third in a row with the intention of continuing the line of last year: fourth in the standings before the coronavirus break with 14 wins in 22 games.

Y will try to do it with the Marcelinho Huertas-Shermadini duo, and with six new incorporations (a classic for less powerful teams), in which five already know the Endesa League: Bruno Fitipaldo (Burgos), Emir Sulejmanovic and Sergio Rodríguez ( Bilbao), Aaron Doornekamp (Valencia) and Dejan Todorovic (Andorra), who will miss most of the season due to a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee in a friendly against Movistar Estudiantes. Tyler Cavanaugh will be the rookie: the American power forward arrives from Alba Berlin.
