Atlético will start the 2020-21 season with pending issues

The rojiblanco team begins the preseason with the Covid tests after three weeks of vacation. Grbic, focused on the national team, is the only signing.

Atlético kicks off the 2020-21 season. After enjoying three weeks of vacation since the elimination in the Champions League at the hands of Leipzig, the rojiblancos will undergo PCR tests for the coronavirus before getting to work tomorrow thinking about the league debut of the last weekend of September against the Granada. They will exercise a few days in Majadahonda until they start training on Monday in Los Angeles de San Rafael. Before that debut in the League, they expect two friendlies, on the 15th against Cádiz at Carranza and on the 19th against Almería.

Simeone will not be able to count on Oblak, Grbic, Vrsaljko, Savic, Trippier, Manu Sánchez, João Félix and Carrasco, all of them summoned with their respective national teams. Without the Croatian goalkeeper, Cholo will not have any new signings on his return to work. Yes, some familiar face, such as Mollejo or San Román, back from their respective assignments, but the incorporations are still waiting to accelerate the exit operation. The search for a forward and that of a positional midfielder will not advance if there are no exits, with one of the three right-backs, Hermoso, Herrera, Lemar, Vitolo or Costa in the window. The one who is not, but still does not renew, is Thomas. At the moment they are all going back to work with their future up in the air.

But if the club has many tasks to do, Simeone is also clear that from the first day it is necessary to work to avoid mistakes of the past. With the transition year completed, where the eight new faces made stability difficult, this season is the one to take a step forward. Atlético need to boost the goal, with its worst figures in the League since the 2005-06 season and with the worst Pichichi since 1999. The lack of success in the face of goal and the excess of conservatism in some games caused them to finish last year with 16 draws, a figure that completely annuls the possibility of fighting for the title and that made third place very difficult. For this, a more leading role of João Félix is expected from day one.

Carrasco and Llorente boost the attack

El Cholo will try to improve the game between the lines to see more continuity to the Portuguese, a player full of talent whose evolution depends a good part of the future of the team. The coach will also have Carrasco from the first game, which ended up being very important after his arrival in the winter market and a Llorente who from Anfield has gone from pivot to offensive player, being able to appear up front or on the wing. It is also important to have a Felipe in tune from the first day. It is difficult for the Brazilian to get into shape and last season it took him a long time to enter the schemes. If he is well, he can form a golden defense with Giménez or Savic.

Atlético will have to work to have greater fluidity in the center of the field and allow Saúl to reach the rival area more. With the bulk of the competition training for weeks, it seems essential to arrive in good physical shape so as not to leave points in the first days. Keep in mind that Atlético will make their debut when Granada will already have two days on their legs. Many pending duties and a few weeks to carry them out, so there is no other choice but to work and wait for an acceleration in the market that will allow the two weakest areas to be strengthened.
